Mitzi: On Mac portables and some desktop Macs, the function keys don’t work as function keys unless you hold down the fn key at the same time you press one. Instead, they change system settings such as sound level and display brightness. If you want to reverse this behavior, so that pressing an Fkey invokes a software command, choose Apple menu System Preferences Keyboard & Mouse. Then in the Keyboard tab enable “Use all F1, F2, etc. Keys as standard function keys”. The Fkeys will then operate normally, and you will need to hold down the fn key to use them to adjust sound, brightness, etc. (Thanks for the question!
I think I’ll make a new story out of it). The f7 key is now working as I am used to. I am also using the fn key as you suggested as well. I have an even bigger problem and I can see from some forums that it is widespread. Previously on Quark 7, when I “command Print,” I chose Adobe PDF in the print dialogue box to create a PS file (which I then distilled to a pdf).
IN Quark 9 there is no option for Adobe PDF in the print dialogue box. Is there a way to get the Adobe pdf maker into the print dialogue box? Or do I just use the “export” to pdf under the file menu to create a pdf in Quark. And if this is the case, why on earth have I purchased the latest Adobe Acrobat X Pro? Making a good pdf is a crucial aspect of the graphics business. What luck finding you in this forum.
Following your instructions I have made a PS file after changing preferences in Quark 9. I am now studying press optimized settings, &c., in Distiller.
This has always been challenging. If you know anything about this deep topic, most designers would be grateful for basic info. In the past I have talked to the technical person in the office of whatever printer I am dealing with to find out what I should do. Low-res pdfs are never a problem, as they are usually used for proofing or uploaded online. But when one is going to press it is a very big deal. Struggling along. Mitzi: I’ve always just followed the instructions given to me by my commercial printer.
Often, they even have a Distiller settings file that you can use. That takes the guesswork out.
If that isn’t possible, or I don’t know who the printer will be, I use whatever the highest setting is in Distiller (or Acrobat or QuarkXPress) and tweak it so that crop & reg marks are included, and that no graphics are downsampled. Even though this creates a larger PDF file than may be necessary, it give me peace of mind that I’m giving my printer everything they could possibly need.
